Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra told investors in a briefing that Horizon and Gran Turismo are getting TV shows.
While it is easy to imagine Horizon, a game set in a post-apocalyptic world after a rogue machine AI apocalypse, turned into a TV show, it is much more difficult to think how to turn a passionate but microtransaction riddled mess like Gran Turismo into a TV show without it being generic.
Horizon currently spans two games – Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West – and an expansion – Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds. There’s also a board game based on the first game.
Hints of what a Horizon TV series could perhaps be found in the two Horizon Zero Dawn comic book volumes.
Unlike the games, which puts the players in the shoes of Aloy, the fiery haired outcast turned hero, the comic books focused on other characters such as Talanah, the first female leader of the Hunters Lodge and Erend, a member of the industrious tribe called the Oseram and a major supporting character in the Horizon series.
Focusing on Aloy in the series could be a mistake as she is an already established character in the game and any deviation could alienate fans. Stray too far, however, like setting the story outside of the US where the events of the game happen, and it might get the same result.
In the meantime, the God Of War series has landed a deal on Amazon’s Prime Video. Based on reports the series tells the story of Kratos and Atreus and not the story of Kratos’s bloody rampage across the Greek pantheon.
Other Sony and Playstation productions that are turning into either TV shows or movies are Last of Us, Twisted Metal, and Ghost of Tsushima.
