It’s a good thing that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has not approved the 5G rates suggested by Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) because it is high according to the former CEO of Malaysia’s first internet service provider, Jaring.
Mohamed Awang Lah told FMT that based on DNB’s Reference Access Offer (RAO) released last month, the price of internet access to the service provider is roughly RM30 per month for every Megabit per second (Mbpd).
He added that the price is way off the mark from the targeted RM7 per month for every Megabit per second (Mbpd) set by MCMC under the Mandatory Standard on Access Pricing (MSAP).
At the rate that the RAO suggested, said Mohammad Awang, the new 5G service can’t be affordable or practical for consumers and businesses. It will also hinder the spread and adoption of 5G in the country.
That said, the MCMC had yet to approve DNB’s RAO.
Currently, DNB and the four big local mobile network operators (MNO) have until the end of June to come to a consensus.
