During Galaxy Unpacked on 9 Feb, Samsung has officially launched it’s highly anticipated S22 series of smartphones. These are the best devices the phone maker has to offer that does not fold.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 series consists of three different devices, the standard S22, the slightly larger S22+, and the true successor to the Galaxy Note series, the S22 Ultra.
All three smartphones are “armour aluminium” frame sandwiches, with a Gorilla Glass Victus+ front and a Gorilla Glass Victus+ bottom.
They are also running the new One UI 4.1 user interface, and pack an Exynos 2200 octa-core processor..
The displays (of various sizes) on all three displays are those gorgeous Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels.
In other words, the software is feature packed, the processor is the best Samsung has made to date, and the phone screen is a treat to look at.
We’ll detail the many, many software and camera features of the S22 series devices once we get our hands on them for review.
Here we’ll take a brief look at what’s familiar, what’s new, and our first impression of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.
The OG Is BACK!
Samsung says that the S22 Ultra is a combination of what makes Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S series special.
But when we held it, we felt that the S22 Ultra is actually a Note series Ultra replacing an S series Ultra. The flat top and bottom ends and the curved sides, holding the S22 Ultra was deja vu.
It has more in common with the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra than the other phones in the S22 series.
The most striking design element on the S22 Ultra is it’s pack panel. There is no camera bump, but each camera on the back of the device is raised and has a ring.
It’s not entirely new and will look familiar to some.
Of course, Samsung fitted the S22 Ultra with the best they could muster. The best cameras (up to 108 mp), the best display (6.8in), the biggest storage and the biggest RAM.
The S Pen on the S22 Ultra can do everything it could on the Note 20 Ultra, and more. THe predictive algorithm and increased sensitivity makes it feel more and more like a real pen.
But, perhaps a textured screen protector would give the S22 Ultra the true pen on paper feel.
When it comes to colours, it’s all dark, like a DCU movie. All four options: phantom black, white, burgundy, green says serious and sophisticated.
You’ll need accessories to make the S22 Ultra look fun and creative. Thankfully Sasmsung got you covered.
On that note, we love the matt glass finish on the back of the S22, although not as much as what we saw on the S22 and S22+.
The S22 Ultra comes in three configurations: 128GB storage with 8GB RAM, 256GB storage with 12GB RAM, and 512GB with 12GB RAM.
