Vehicles by Tesla Motors aren’t officially available in in Malaysia yet, but that doesn’t stop the Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia (PEKEMA) from selling them.

The association plans to sell 500 units of Tesla cars every year for two years during the electric vehicle (EV) tax exemption period which was proposed in Budget 2022.

Currently PEKEMA source these Tesla cars from Hong Kong and the UK. They are also working to source more cars from Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore.

They have said the Hong Kong models may have some restrictions in the form of no on-board games or internet browsing, but ones from the UK will have these features off the bat.

Because these cars were never made for the Malaysian market, the Teslas arrive with some quirks.

The models from Hong Kong prevents users from gaming or browsing the internet. However, the ones from the UK needs to be updated and modified so that it’s navigation system will work in Malaysia.

We also hope the government will consider our application to bring in Tesla units through Tesla Singapore, which will further facilitate logistics for customers.

Every Tesla purchased through PEKEMA will also get an eight years warranty for the battery and electric motor warranty and four year warranty for the rest of the car.

They also offer repairs and services by trained technicians.

Services like installing a local SIM and software updates will cost extra.

Unlike Teslas sold in the US, the ones that are sold in Malaysia are compatible with standard EV chargers.

PEKEMA has installed seven DC-fast charging stations around Klang Valley with plans to open 1,000 more charging stations all over Malaysia by 2025.

On top of that, Petronas has plans to install EV chargers all along Major Highways in Malaysia starting next year.
