Xbox Series S/X has been supporting 1440p since the launch of that console, even last-gen consoles like the Xbox One support 1440p. But the same cannot be said for PS4 and PS5.

There are many gamers out there rocking a 1440p monitor because it is the ideal resolution. The resolution is not too low, nor is it too high, like 4K, making it perfect for gaming. Sony knows a lot of fans have been requesting 1440p output for years, and they finally gave what the fans wanted.

Sony is rolling out the update globally starting 7 September 2022 and players can finally put their 1440p monitor to good use. You can check whether your monitor is supported by going to the “Screen and Video” menu in the settings and choosing “Test 1440p Output”.

The variable refresh rates (VRR) that synchronise games and monitor framerates are disabled while using 1440p, though. As a result, you can have screen tearing and other problems that affect smoothness.

There’s no reason why PS5 couldn’t do that because Xbox Series S/X can support 1440p and VRR at the same time. They are also running almost identical hardware. Hopefully, an update in the future will fix this issue.

The update also includes the ability to organise your games into folders. Sony calls it “Gamelists”. You are allowed to have as many as 15 Gamelists, each with 100 titles on it and a mixture of disc and digital games.

Other new features allow you to check the profiles of new friends, ask a party member for a Share Screen and get notifications that will let you join a friend’s game from the party chat.

PS5 owners in the US and the UK get to try out a new feature that allows you to search YouTube using Voice Command on the PS5, even while playing.

You should be getting the update right now on your PS5. So, boot up your console and enjoy 1440p!
