The much-awaited launch of the new generation of AMD Ryzen desktop processors is finally here after the company first announced it back in May 2022 during Computex 2022. The new Ryzen processors are powered by the new “Zen 4” architecture, built on an optimized, high-performance, TSMC 5nm process node.

According to AMD, consumers can expect to see a 13% increase in instructions per cycle (IPC) over the previous generation and up to a 29% increase in single-thread performance. This is mostly due to the flagship model’s increased clock rates, which are 800 MHz faster than those in the current series and capable of reaching up to 5.7 GHz.

In comparison to Ryzen 9 5950X, AMD claims that Ryzen 9 7950X offers 6% to 35% greater gaming performance. Performance improvements range from 32% to 48% in rendering programmes including V-Ray Render, Corona, and POV-Ray.

The Ryzen 9 7950X and i9-12900K are also being compared by AMD in the V-Ray benchmark, where the Zen4 CPU offers up to 57% greater raytraced performance and up to 47% better performance per watt.

On average, the 6-core Ryzen 5 7600X performs 5% better in games than the i9-12900K, the top-of-the-line Intel 12th Gen Core CPU.

New AMD AM5 Socket

With new processors, AMD also introduces new motherboards to go with it. You can no longer use DDR4 RAM with Zen4 CPUs, only the new and expensive DDR5 RAM is compatible with the new motherboards.

  • AMD X670 Extreme: Bringing the most connectivity and extreme overclocking capabilities with PCIe 5.0 support for graphics and storage.
  • AMD X670: Supporting enthusiast overclocking with PCIe 5.0 support for storage and optional graphics support.
  • AMD B650E: Designed for performance users with PCIe 5.0 storage support and optional graphics support.
  • AMD B650: Designed for mainstream users with support for DDR5 memory and optional PCIe 5.0 support.

New motherboards will be available starting from USD125 (RM560), with the AMD X670 and X670E chipsets arriving in September, and AMD B650E and B650 chipsets in October.
