These days, a large number of companies are hopping on the NFT/Metaverse bandwagon. Although it is a relatively recent trend in Malaysia, it has been around for a while in other nations. The NFT/Metaverse is basically a trend they want to attempt to profit on since they typically have their primary businesses. For example, KFC’s NFT features digital art pieces. Fried chicken is KFC’s primary business; the NFT is only an experiment to determine whether it can be profitable.
However, this new Malaysian company built their entire company around it, and to draw customers, they invited the nation’s most well-known politician and immortalised him in the digital world.
What Is NFT & Metaverse?
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token and it only exist in a digital form and one-of-a-kind. It can be an art piece, an image, a text, and many more. NFT exists on the blockchain and can be traded with others for another NFT or money.
The metaverse is basically a digital world. The term metaverse was popularized by Mark Zuckerberg and his company, Meta. According to Wired, virtual reality, which is characterised by persistent virtual environments that continue to exist even when you’re not playing, and augmented reality, which fuses elements of the digital and actual worlds, are both examples of the metaverse.
However, it is not necessary for those environments to just be accessible through VR or AR. The term “the metaverse” has begun to be used by virtual worlds, such as portions of Fortnite that can be accessed through computers, video gaming consoles, and even mobile devices.
Who Is This New Company?
Uniquepro Meta Holdings Sdn Bhd is a new Malaysian start-up company that focuses on NFTs and Metaverse and they kickstarted their business by memorialising our former prime minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad into a photo gallery that exists only in the metaverse world and you can also buy NFTs of Tun’s photos (no idea how much those NFTs are going to cost though).
Syed Saddiq did something similar previously, selling his own NFTs to raise funds for his constituency. So this is not the first time a politician has been transformed into an NFT.
The company didn’t say if the photo gallery is open to all to visit or only by invitation. Also, you need a Virtual Reality (VR) setup if you want to see Tun’s photos in the metaverse.
What Are They Planning To Do Next?
They are planning to introduce more NFTs and photo galleries based on local celebrities and Negarawan. They also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and partnership agreements with HUAWEI and Malacca Museum. No doubt they are building a metaverse version of Malacca Museum with the help of HUAWEI.
Should I Buy An NFT?
Only if you are a big fan of Tun. And you don’t actually own the photos. Confused? You are just basically buying something that says you bought this NFT, but Tun’s photos don’t belong to you.
If unfortunately, the company shuts down, you’ll probably have to say bye-bye to all the NFTs you bought from them.
As of the time of writing, the company didn’t say how much those NFTs are going to cost or where and how you can get them. So, if you see this is something of value to you, you can go ahead.
